Common Types of Job Scams and How They Work

Work from Home Scam

Job scams can take many different forms. One of the most common is the “work-from-home” scam, where scammers promise high income with minimal effort. Fake airline ground staff jobs, paid YouTube likes, or upfront training fees are common tactics. Avoid offers requiring payment before employment.

Fake Job Posting

Scammers post fake job openings on legitimate job portals or create fake websites. They may charge application fees or conduct fake interviews to steal personal information.

Like and Earn Scam

Fraudsters contact victims via WhatsApp or Telegram offering tasks such as liking YouTube videos. Fake earnings are shown, followed by requests to “invest” money. Once transferred, scammers block communication or misuse bank details.

Red Flags to Look Out for in Job Postings

  • Unrealistic offers: Very high salary with no experience or guaranteed jobs.
  • Research the company: Poor websites, missing contact details, or fake reviews.
  • No upfront fees: Legitimate employers never ask for money, OTPs, or CVV details.
  • Protect personal data: Be cautious sharing Aadhaar, PAN, passport, or bank info.
  • Unsolicited emails: Job offers without applying are suspicious.
  • Fake interviews: Used to extract money or sensitive data.
  • Poor grammar: Errors in emails or postings indicate fraud.
  • Verification charges: Asking money to release earnings is a scam.
